Who We Are
Our Church History
In 1866, one year after the Civil War, a band of worshipers organized a religious group under a brush arbor near East Market Street in Greensboro, NC. This land was later donated to the church by Zephaniah Mitchell, an ancestor of the Dean Family. One of Mr. Mitchell's descendants is one of our current parishioners. This group was the humble beginning of what was destined to be known as The Providence Baptist Church.
In 1871, under the leadership of the Reverend Abe Cowan, a one-room frame building was constructed. In addition to being a place of worship, it served as a community school conducted by Professor C. L. Davis. Four years later, the congregation of Providence Baptist Church erected on the same site the first brick and mortar church for African-Americans in the state.
City redevelopment efforts during the early 1960s resulted in the demolition of the one-room church. This did not deter parishioners from fellowship and worshiping the Lord. For a short period, members met on Sundays in the Richard Berry Harrison Auditorium on the campus of NC A&T State University (then A&T College) with smaller groups meeting to fellowship in the evenings and at night. In December of 1967, Providence moved into its new $288,000 edifice on Tuscaloosa Street. Services are still being conducted there today. The edifice was expanded in 1986 and then again in the 1990's to include a canopy and elevator.
In November 2007, the Howard Allen Chubbs Family Enrichment Center, a 32,000 sq. ft. facility, was dedicated. This $4 million facility serves both the congregation and the community.
For more than 150 years, Providence Baptist Church has been a beacon of light and a strong influence in the community and state. Providence has been blessed over the years with a dedicated group of outstanding Christian pastors, nearly all have completed their education through colleges and divinity schools. Among these have been the late Dr. J. J. Scarlette, pastor for thirteen years; the late Dr. J. W. Tynes, who led the congregation for twenty-six years; the Reverend Lorenzo A. Lynch, the pastor for six years; and Dr. Howard A. Chubbs, who was the pastor from March of 1966 until his death in March of 2015. On Sunday, December 6, 2015, Providence Baptist Church voted overwhelmingly to accept the Rev. Dr. Darryl W. Aaron as our new pastor. Dr. Rev. Aaron delivered his first sermon as pastor of Providence Baptist Church on Sunday, January 3, 2016.
